In this short video, I discuss some plans for my RUclips channel. I will be starting two new playlists. On one playlist, I will be making videos in sort of a v-log format and talking about various off grid subjects such as cabin building, hunting, guiding adventures, bear stories, alternative power, self sufficiency, etc. On the second new playlist, I will be making occasional videos about Bibl...
Old Hand Hewn Cabin Shell Part 1
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.7 месяцев назад
In this video, I explain how I am re-notching logs from an old cabin that was dismantled in Boulder, Montana. I am using dovetail notches to cut new notches and reconfigure this old cabin to be an 18x22 shell. The old logs are hand hewn and vary in size which is not a problem for the dovetail jig system. You can get custom plans for log dovetail jigs from my website: logdovetailjig.com If you a...
Customers Cabins ep2 [log dovetail jigs]

Here are a few really nice log cabins made with log dovetail jigs. The jigs make it very easy to cut dovetail notches for building log cabins. This type of log cabin notch is very traditional and is found all over the US and in Europe. My website, logdovetailjig.com has a ton of info on building log cabins and many photos of log cabins built using the log dovetail jigs. Two of the cabins in thi...

Sawmill Mods

I have a manual sawmill, a Woodmizer LT 15, and I made a few modifications to it: 12v winch powered clamp, backstops, and log turner. I also made a simple mod to the manual clamps. I use this sawmill for milling lumber and logs for log cabins usually but today I am milling logs for the log barn. You can get custom dovetail jig plans, free cabin plans and lots of log cabin building how-to info a...

Small Off Grid Home Tour

This is a tour of our off grid solar powered home in Montana. We have 10 acres of property that is near a Wilderness area. We built this cabin which is very rustic and was made using reclaimed barnwood, hand hewn logs, and rusty metal roofing. It does have many modern conveniences though! Watch to the end to see how much this property cost. Off grid living means different things to different pe...
I love Dick Proenneke's story... It's ultimately the reason I came to live in Alaska. I saw his documentary on PBS in about 1997, and was hooked on his lifestyle. In 2021, I was able to take a trip to Twin Lakes with my two sons and camp at the mouth of Hope Creek, right behind Dick's cabin, for five days. It was a wonderful trip... one I'm glad I got to make. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions... the information really helps many of us to make the transition to a simpler lifestyle. Peace to you from Alaska!
Very interesting little camper. Looks to be quite light weight. What would be the advantage of something like this over just a large tent? I suppose you wouldn't have to put it up and take it down each day... but with a tent, you wouldn't need a trailer. Curious what your take on this is...
How did you handle laundry while you lived here? If you'd had a bunch of kids while you were here, what would you have done with them? Yep, I'm trying to figure that part out for my own construction...
Great idea,......awesome job......good on you......
How lucky is that dog.Running freely in the woods.
Boy, you work fast!
Very cool with the canvas top!
Howdy Brother- that is one cool camper. I’ve dreamed about making a camper like a covered Chuck wagon but got too much other things to do. Hope all is well. God bless
Cozy and comfortable 👍🙏🏻💗
Simply, beautiful setup.
Lovely simple little camper. Would love that. 🙂
The best modifications I have ever seen on any mill.
You have 270 degrees of clear area around the house. The last has the underbrush clear. Contact your DNR to get a comprehensive plan put together. They might use your setup to fill brush trucks and keep the fire far away.
Thanks for explaining. if your logs were not all the same height how would you scribe them to do a tight fit ? do you have a video on that ?
Where great video where do get plans fot jigs thank you very much
I’m trying to get my head around whether such a jig could be used with whole round logs to build similarly. I have a lot of poplar on my land that needs to be thinned and ranges from 5-10 inches in diameter mostly. I’d like to build some small lean to shelters in the woods and wondering if using such a jig on a whole log that size would work.
You could use it for round logs that have the interior face milled flat.
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. People are doing wonderful things with your jig.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful homes built using your jig. Mom wanted decorative shutters and I remember Dad saying, "I'll make a jig for you and cut the lengths then you can put them together." The next evening he was ham-mering them up and the place looked so much more attractive. Jigs are great!
Howdy Brother- those are some beautiful homes! I understand the feeling of satisfaction knowing you were able to help someone achieve their dream. Hope all is well. God’s blessings to you
Those are some beautiful cabins!
Sounds good Brother. We all need Jesus. He is what the world needs and we should pray for them. He is our only Hope. :) Amen 😊
That is one beautiful home. I'm hoping to build a 24' x 36' two story with half loft. 8" Tulip Poplar walls from my own land. It would be very close to how this home looks.
I'm going to build a 24' x 36' two story with a half loft. My log sizes will be 8'' thick. What face height and chink height do you recommend? I have 10 acres of huge and smaller Tulip Poplar in the Heart of Almost Heaven West Virginia :) Great video and thanks for making it.
I would put down copper flashing before I put down my base cord to keep termites out. Great video 👍
I also was looking at this place and I still enjoy fishing the creek, but the gas line was a bit of a deal breaker.
Which area/ location did you capture this beautiful array of light and color? Thank you.
This was near Helena but I think it was visible from many places. First time I had seen the Northern Lights.
Awesome. I did not know we could see this from Montana, another reason to go there.
That’s beautiful!! Thanks for posting this!
Awesome!!!! 😊❤️🌌
Your cabin is beautiful - you must be stoked

Thank you for letting us know it is Montana. City folks might like a list of the critters. I think you're the only one that has a post that includes several shots of the huge white mt. goats! Wow, and lots of big turkeys, a cougar, several shots of bobcat I think and the heron is wonderful too. Thank you for showing us all of the seasons, snowstorms and these wonderful animals!! Best, from Colorado!
Great job but I dont think the power setup behind the shower curtain is a good idea. The rest is great.
I live very rural and consider myself blessed . Lots of different animals on Trail Cam . Very nice .
